چکیده

One of the challenges of the design process is to develop a strategy that enables designers to gain insight from practice-based research that can be used to carry the development of a project forward to its realisation. In this paper we draw on the theory of strategic argumentation as a way to reason about and plan the manner in which design products should function in a particular set of circumstances. For the purposes of this research we focus on the creation of a social-based software system that supports the reading and learning activities of students in an educational setting. By necessity this reasoned approach involves the participation of project stakeholders and potential end-users of the system. This is an important distinction as we look to the end-user community who know the form of a product from practical experience and are guided by the knowledge garnered from user-centered experiments that examined students’ readings styles and strategies. The outcome of this research illustrates the role of argument-based reasoning as a method of passing judgment regarding the type of design decisions that should be made. We illustrate this method through a case study example that begins with an initial design proposal used to explore end-user activities and discuss how our research findings led the iterative development of an interactive prototype tool.

Knowledge Management for Improving Corporate Performance: an Applicaton of Argumentation Language

The paper proposes an argumentation language approach to support the decision making process in today’s knowledge driven organizations. The argumentation language can assist decision makers when evaluating alternative courses of action by better recognizing the causeeffect relationships and their impact on company performance. The proposed approach combines the Balanced Scorecard (BSC) methodol...

Belief in Attacks in Epistemic Probabilistic Argumentation

The epistemic approach to probabilistic argumentation assigns belief to arguments. This is valuable in dialogical argumentation where one agent can model the beliefs another agent has in the arguments and this can be harnessed to make strategic choices of arguments to present. In this paper, we extend this epistemic approach by also representing the belief in attacks. We investigate properties ...

A Comparative Study of Argumentation- and Proposal-Based Negotiation

Recently, argumentation-based negotiation has been proposed as an alternative to classical mechanism design. The main advantage of argumentation-based negotiation is that it allows agents to exchange complex justification positions rather than just simple proposals. Its proponents maintain that this property of argumentation protocols can lead to faster and beneficial agreements when used for c...

On Strategic Argument Selection in Structured Argumentation Systems

This paper deals with strategical issues of arguing agents in a multi-agent setting. We investigate different scenarios of such argumentation games that differ in the protocol used for argumentation, i. e. direct, synchronous, and dialectical argumentation protocols, the awareness that agents have on other agents beliefs, and different settings for the preferences of agents. We give a thorough ...

A critical review of the dominant lines of argumentation on the need for Strategic Environmental Assessment

In spite of almost two decades of experience, Strategic Environmental Assessment’s (SEA) foundations remain unclear to the point that the case for needing an instrument called ‘SEA’ could be questioned. The aim is to ask: what problems was SEA meant to solve, and what needs was it meant to address, by reflecting on the strengths and weaknesses of SEA thinking to date. I do so by organising the ...
